April 2021

Hey guys,

How is it going? Does anyone else feel like these months are flying?

We're back at the end of another month.

April was quite slow for me. I’ve been focused on creating, staying sane and exploring sides of the industry, so all in all this music head hasn’t actually been much of a music head this month– but not to worry, I have still come through with some excellent tuneage for you all.

Access to the playlist is right here.

Let’s jump into these 36 tracks.

Is there any other track to kickstart the warmer weather months than a Major Lazer track? Of course not. That’s why Tiny is our stellar opener. Forget the car test, this one passes the festival test. You remind me, of a girl I once knewwww.

Caroline was a recommendation from the immensely talented music journalist and all-round top guy Dwayne Wilks! He’s doing incredible work, as is Arlo Parks. Check the both of them and you’ll be entertained for hours.

These two tracks were shared by Shawn Mendes, and I agree with him, they are super grounding. They were what I needed and have been needing this month. Wholesome sounds that are felt. This music thing is hard guys. How does anyone do it for 10+ years without dying.

Afraid to Say is my favourite on Bieber’s Freedom EP. I have to laugh at myself because I remember making a bold statement claiming this EP had longevity. It doesn’t, but that doesn’t detract from it being cute for five minutes. Few things have longevity in this life. This song however I think is perfect for the confusion I’m feeling. I wanna grow but I’m afraid. Many of the questions Justin poses in the chorus are questions I ask myself daily. I don’t know the answers. But I do know this world ain’t it.

You’re never too cool to kick back with Robbie. He’s the coolest. Robbie and Taylor Swift at Wembley for the Reputation Tour is still a memory I treasure today. That night and tour were impeccable moments. There’s a line that hits me today that never hit me before: Come on, hold my hand. I wanna contact the living.

Who knows what led to me listening to old Selena Gomez songs. Nostalgia is me. I’m nostalgic for times I’ve never even lived in, it’s that pressing. Love You Like A Love Song was fantastic.

RUE is the artist behind these three tracks. No clue how I came across her either, but her tweet about not hacking working in an office made me laugh. Ivy’s Kid is a great EP. Definitely check it out and I do believe she has more music coming soon. I’ll keep you posted.

Tate McRae is fast becoming one of my favourites. You’ll soon realise with these things that I have an affinity for moody emo pop. She gives me Chelsea Cutler and Jeremy Zucker vibes, add in a dash of Bazzi too. I love it. It’s understated, raw and honest.

Believe It. Bro, I just miss Rihanna. I know she’s looking at the music scene laughing. The bar is dropping and you’ll notice it when you backtrack.

Jhene Aiko. My favourite sugar-coated demon exposing one of, if not my greatest, weaknesses. Why you breaking my heart? (she says as she breaks hearts).

The Hailee marathon is due to my watching of Apple TV’s Dickinson. Hailee is fantastic. I don’t understand how we don’t shout about her more. She’s criminally underrated. Her discography is bop after bop. Argue with your mum I really don’t care. It’s Wrong Direction for me though, cut straight through my armour and hit me where it hurt.

Electric Feel! Name me a better line than “shock me like an electric eel!”. Who in their right mind wants to be shocked by a horrifying slimy fish with electricity producing organs? Do you know how wild it is that nature created that? But god forbid we take electronics into water. It’s these weird creatures casually existing that makes me wonder how us humans even think it’s plausible that we’re the pinnacle of evolution. It’s nonsense. Humble yourselves please, nature ends us.

Mike Posner was in his bag with this track. I’ve not heard much from him recently but Please Don’t Go was excellent.

Dear Maria, Count Me In. We all had an emo/rock phase at secondary school right? All Time Low, Good Charlotte, Paramore, P!ATD and countless others I’ll forget and only remember if I ever find my iPod Nano again. Damn what a time.

I’m pretty sure this Maggie Rogers track is in the Dickinson soundtrack. That’s a 10/10 soundtrack. Shout out to Beth for teaching me the word “anachronistic”. This isn’t a Dicksinson glory piece, except it is. An exceptional piece of television.

I wanna see you 365 and 24 hours a day. Who hasn’t? It’s creepy when you reflect on it but, love. I can’t leave her alone; she got a spell of her own.

Almost at the end now and we have a #NoSkips album. See when I said the bar is lowering? In 1982, the bar was here. People were living back then. My nostalgia is too real.

Baby you’re the devil I know, better than the devil I don’t. Need I say more? Another Dickinson soundtrack song.

That’s a wrap on April. We’ll be moving into May by force I guess. Time’s unforgiving. P.S I hate when people poke their heads past my door and into my room unprovoked and uninvited. Is it just me who gets annoyed? Remote working isn’t it either.

Stay safe, stay sane, stay paid, and do send me any recommendations for May :)

Love you,

Steph.
